Abraham Lincoln: The 16th President of the U.S.

The speech given by Abraham Lincoln during one of his House appearances in the year 1858 basically summarizes his overall campaign against slavery, which is what he is known for. It talked about how important it is for the U.S. government to look at its people equally. Only by doing so can the government reign supreme.

Abraham Lincoln is seen as one of the greatest political figures in the history of the United States. He was elected to become President on February 11, 1861 and is the 16th president of the American people. During his term, it was the height of injustice in terms of human rights. Slavery and inequalities among those considered “white” people and “black” people (African American) were rampant. Unlike other government officials that are more interested in politics, Abraham Lincoln, when he took the oath of being the President of the United States, was more focused on equal rights. He was against racism and most especially slavery.

The Achievement of Abraham Lincoln

During his time Abraham Lincoln was able to implement many laws that would greatly affect American history forever. One of which is the ‘Emancipation Proclamation’. This resulted in African American soldiers joining the Union Army and Navy. Next, he implemented the 13th Amendment which states that slavery will be permanently abolished throughout the nation. In 1862, he created The Morrill Act. This law paved the way to set up land-grant colleges all over the US in the fields of agriculture and mechanic art. This made a big impact as it was able to distribute an approximate 17,400,000 acres of federal land to eligible states. In the same year, Abraham Lincoln created the Homestead Act. This law allowed millions of acres of land available at very low prices, specifically in the West area. An American citizen just needed to pay $18 for the land and needed to inhabit it for a minimum of 5 years and make substantial improvements to it to be awarded an estimate of 160 acres of federal land free of charge.

Between the years 1863 and 1864, there were two laws that he passed that were also popular in American history: the National Banking Act and the Pacific Railroad Act. The National Banking Act allowed the existence of a network of national banks. This law was also responsible for the first ever paper currency in the US. The Pacific Railroad Act, on the other hand, helped develop the railroad system that helped a lot of traders that eventually influenced the success of the American economy. This act granted railroad companies big land and government bonds to construct their railroads.

Abraham Lincoln set the bar of American presidency. He was known to be a man full of courage, integrity and deep love for his country and his fellowmen. Because of his passion, he was able to run a successful campaign on the success of the US civilization. Because of his compassion, he was able to save thousands of lives because of crusade on human rights, which will make him well-known far beyond his time all over the world.
