What Is the Meaning of Life?

Humans have been asking themselves what the meaning of life is since the start of civilization. Ancient philosophers have given answers as best they could, even though their answers were different. Different people have different opinions on what gives our life value. Plato, Socrates, Aristotle and the Roman Stoics all tried to explain the meaning of life. More specifically, they tried to give life a meaning – the meaning they though was true at the time. However, each person has different perceptions on the meaning of life. Everyone adds their own meaning to life.

Why Are We Here?

If there is a God, as most people think, why did he put us on this Earth? What is our meaning? Most Christians will tell you that God put us on this Earth to serve Him. However, we don’t know exactly what this means. Why would a supernatural and omnipotent being create us and give us life just to serve it? It is my opinion that there must be a concrete reason why we are here. There must be a greater answer to this question.

The Meaning of Life Is Not Universal

I have worked hard to succeed in everything I planned my entire life. I strived to be the best I can be and do the things I had planned. Other people work hard to excel at various sports. Many people take great pleasure from helping the needy. All these activities add meaning to their lives. In other words, the meaning of life doesn’t have to be something complex. It is never the same for everyone. Each one of us does something because it makes a difference to us – it means something to us. This means that we each add our own meaning to life.

Greek and Roman Philosophers

Socrates believed that humans will do almost anything to achieve happiness. He believed that by doing good, humans could add meaning to their life. According to Socrates, our ethics make our lives what they are meant to be. People who do wrong to others can’t experience the good of life. Aristotle had different views from Socrates. To him, happiness is a direct result of personal experiences. To Aristotle, our lovers and friendships give our lives meaning. The Roman Stoics thought that the meaning of life is happiness. And this happiness can only be achieved through the quest of virtue.

In Conclusion

Since the early days of civilization, human beings have tried to give meaning to their life. They tried to explain why we are here and what makes us better human beings. Each philosopher had his own take on the meaning of life. And people will never agree on this simply because there is no such thing as a universal meaning of life. Each one of us has his or her own meaning. It is what makes us happy and what we do to achieve happiness that gives meaning to our life.
